The teen years are a period of intense growth for kids, not only physically but also morally and intellectually. It is usually a time of confusion and upheaval for many families. It is important to remember that this is a time when young people are often troubled by issues such as sexual identity, physical appearance, social status, parents' expectations and acceptance from peers. At this stage most young adults are establishing a sense of self-identity and shifting from parental dependence to independence. There is no doubt that being the parent of a teenager can be very stressful. Most parents find this to be a very challenging time. Although it can be a period of conflict between parent and child, the teen years are also a time to help kids grow into the distinct individuals they will become.
